Keynote Speaker: Caril Cowan

Programme Coordinator: Mental Health Support Work School of Public Health & Psychosocial Studies.

Caril is the author of Supporting the Journey of Recovery in Mental Health; A guide for support workers, family/whanau and friends.

On leaving school, Caril Cowan, as so many young women in the 1960s had, taken one of the few options available, nursing. It was not until half way through her career that she chose for herself and made a complete change to mental health, quickly developing a special interest in people who have complex and high level support needs. She upgraded her nursing qualification to an undergraduate degree, followed by a Post Graduate Diploma and Masters of Arts (Nursing). After working in the community supporting people whose lives were significantly and adversely affected by mental illness, including being a team leader in a support work service, Caril worked at AUT University to establish the National Certificate in Mental Health (Mental Health Support Work) now the only university certificate for mental health support workers Certificate in Applied Mental Health. In 2000 she established the AUT Diploma in Mental Health Support Work then the Bachelor in Health Science in Applied Mental Health, mental health support work minor. Post graduate programmes in health leadership are also being offered to mental health support workers. Caril remains the Programme Coordinator of the mental health support work programmes as well as running a private practice in supervision, in service education and consulting.
